Frequently Asked Questions
Everything You Need to Know Before You Ride
We’re always happy to answer your questions — whether you’re completely new to horseback riding or getting back in the saddle after time away.
Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from new students and families at Four Willows Farm.
If you don’t see your question here, feel free to contact us anytime.
What ages do you accept for lessons?
We offer horseback riding lessons for students as young as 3 years old. There is no upper age limit — we work with children, teens, and adults of all experience levels. Our programs are tailored to each rider’s age, ability, and learning style.
Do I need any prior experience?
Not at all. Many of our students start with no prior experience. We welcome total beginners and provide a safe, supportive environment to help you learn the basics at your own pace.
What should I wear to a riding lesson?
For your safety and comfort, we recommend:
- Long pants (leggings or fitted jeans work well)
- A boot with a small heel (paddock boots, western boots, or rain boots)
- A fitted shirt or top that allows you to move easily
- Hair tied back if long
- Helmets and gloves are provided for all students.
Do I need my own horse?
No. All of our lessons are taught on calm, well-trained lesson horses owned by Four Willows Farm. If you have your own horse or plan to lease in the future, we’re happy to help integrate that into your program when the time comes.
How long are lessons?
Lesson length may vary by age and program, but most standard lessons are approximately 30 to 60 minutes, including both mounted time and hands-on instruction like grooming or tacking.
Are private or group lessons available?
Lesson length may vary by age and program, but most standard lessons are approximately 30 to 60 minutes, including both mounted time and hands-on instruction like grooming or tacking.
What’s included in beginner riding lessons?
Beginner lessons focus on:
- Safety around horses
- Mounting and dismounting
- Riding at the walk and trot
- Basic steering and stopping
- Understanding horse behavior
- Introductory horse care and grooming
We build confidence through repetition, positive feedback, and matching each rider to the right horse.
Do you offer summer camps or special programs?
Yes. We offer seasonal horse camps for kids and teens. Camps include riding lessons, horse care, barn activities, and games. They're a great introduction to horses and a perfect way to learn in a fun group setting.
Do you offer competition or show training?
We do. Our competition riding lessons and saddleseat program prepare students for local and regional shows. We provide coaching, horse prep, and support for riders interested in equestrian competition.
Can I come watch a lesson before signing up?
Yes. We welcome you to visit the farm, observe a lesson, and meet our horses and instructors. Please contact us to schedule a time — we’ll be happy to show you around.
How do I sign up for lessons?
You can call or email us directly to inquire about lesson availability and get started. We'll talk through your experience level, goals, and scheduling preferences, then match you with the right program and instructor.
Still Have Questions?
We’d love to hear from you. Whether you're ready to start or just exploring, we're happy to provide more information, offer guidance, or schedule a visit.
